The Society of Emergency Medicine Pharmacists (SEMP) thrives on the active participation of its members. Our committees are the engines driving SEMP's mission forward, offering invaluable opportunities to contribute your expertise, collaborate with peers, develop leadership skills, and directly impact the advancement of emergency medicine pharmacy globally.
We invite all interested members to volunteer for one or more committees. Please indicate your interests during registration or contact us. Each committee typically meets monthly, with members contributing approximately 4-5 hours per month during initial phases (including meeting time and task execution), potentially adjusting lower as processes streamline.
Foundational Committees
These committees are actively seeking volunteers now to establish SEMP's core initiatives and services.
Membership Committee
2-5 hrs/monthPurpose
To build and sustain a vibrant, engaged global community of EM pharmacists by managing recruitment, retention, member services, and ensuring high professional standards through quality assurance of applications. Serves as the frontline for member outreach and engagement pathways.
Year 1 Focus
Establish efficient membership processes and infrastructure (portal, renewals); launch a "Charter Member" initiative; refine membership criteria and application rubrics; begin targeted recruitment (residency programs, networks); and start tracking key metrics for growth and engagement.
Member Responsibilities
Key activities include:
- Attend monthly meetings
- Participate in planning and executing recruitment campaigns
- Assist in reviewing applications or refining criteria
- Help gather member feedback
- Contribute to task implementation (e.g., content creation, directory updates)
Chair/Vice Chair roles lead strategy, oversee processes, chair meetings, and report to the Board.
Communications & Digital Strategy Committee
2-5 hrs/monthPurpose
To craft SEMP's brand identity and manage all communication channels, including the website, social media (Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.), the official "Pharm So Hard" podcast, newsletters, and online forums, ensuring consistent, engaging, and informative outreach.
Year 1 Focus
Launch the official SEMP website and core social media profiles; integrate "Pharm So Hard" podcast branding; establish a monthly e-newsletter; define and track initial digital engagement metrics; ensure seamless integration with the membership portal.
Member Responsibilities
Key activities include:
- Attend monthly meetings
- Create and schedule content (social posts, blog entries)
- Draft/edit newsletters
- Monitor channels for engagement
- Collect and report analytics
- Support specific campaigns
Chair/Vice Chair roles define strategy, oversee branding, manage content calendar, and liaise with other committees.
Education & Conference Planning Committee
2-12 hrs/monthPurpose
To establish SEMP as the premier source for EM pharmacy education, develop high-quality CE content, and organize the SEMP Annual Conference (EmpowerRx) as a flagship international event.
Year 1 Focus
Deliver initial CE-accredited webinars; develop a Year 1 content calendar; begin rebranding/integrating EmpowerRx with SEMP identity; establish preliminary conference agenda and session formats; secure initial CE accreditation and partnerships; set up registration systems.
Member Responsibilities
Key activities include:

- Assist in content creation/curation
- Help with speaker research/invitation
- Support webinar/conference logistics
- Manage registration or evaluation tasks
- Contribute ideas for educational improvement
Chair/Vice Chair roles lead educational vision, oversee content quality, manage CE accreditation, chair meetings, and build external partnerships.
Practice & Advocacy Committee
4-5 hrs/monthPurpose
To elevate clinical practice standards and advocate for the professional recognition and integration of EM pharmacists through guideline development, quality benchmarks, policy influence, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Year 1 Focus
Initiate drafting of "Standards of Practice for EM Pharmacy" (covering areas like safety, toxicology, trauma, pediatrics); identify priority advocacy messages; begin targeted outreach to hospital administrators and policy influencers; establish member feedback channels for guideline input.
Member Responsibilities
Key activities include:
- Attend monthly meetings
- Participate in drafting/reviewing guidelines
- Assist in advocacy campaign planning/execution
- Collect and analyze practice-related feedback
- Contribute to position statements and resource creation
Chair/Vice Chair roles lead strategic direction, oversee guideline development, manage stakeholder engagement, and report progress.
Research Committee
2-5 hrs/monthPurpose
To advance EM pharmacy by promoting collaborative research, facilitating evidence generation, providing mentorship to members interested in research, and ensuring findings inform SEMP's practice and educational initiatives.
Year 1 Focus
Establish a digital research repository and standard operating procedures; identify and launch 1-2 pilot projects addressing key clinical questions; develop a research mentorship program; host an initial research methodology workshop; begin exploring collaborative partnerships with academic institutions.
Member Responsibilities

- Actively contribute to research project design, execution, and data analysis
- Support the mentorship program
- Help develop research resources (templates, protocols)
- Assist in gathering feedback and reporting progress

Awards & Recognition Committee
2-3 hrs/monthPurpose
To celebrate excellence in EM pharmacy by recognizing outstanding contributions in clinical practice, research, leadership, and innovation, thereby motivating members and enhancing SEMP's visibility.
Year 1 Focus
Define initial award categories (e.g., Research Excellence, Clinical Practice, Innovation, Emerging Leader) and eligibility criteria; develop the nomination and selection process; establish judging panels; plan and integrate the inaugural awards presentation into the EmpowerRx conference.
Member Responsibilities
Key activities include:
- Attend monthly meetings
- Assist in drafting criteria and nomination forms
- Help promote the awards program
- Support logistical planning for the awards presentation
- Contribute to refining the program based on feedback
